A rare early Mongolian People’s Republic–People’s Republic of China friendship badge, dating from the 1950s, the brief period when Sino-Mongolian relations were developing rapidly within the early socialist bloc. Mongolia and the newly established People’s Republic of China opened diplomatic relations on 16 October 1949, and throughout the 1950s the relationship expanded through official visits, cultural exchanges, economic cooperation and organized friendship activity. Mongolia began holding Mongolian–Chinese Friendship Weeks from 1952, while the Mongolia–China Friendship Society was formally active by the late 1950s. This makes early friendship insignia from the decade particularly interesting: they belong to the high point of postwar Mongol-Chinese rapprochement before the Sino-Soviet split sharply changed the political atmosphere of the 1960s.

The badge is a substantial silver-toned metal and multicolor enamel issue, arranged around the joined flags of the two socialist states. At left is the flag of the Mongolian People’s Republic with its Soyombo, while the red field at right carries the five stars of the People’s Republic of China; between them a raised handshake forms the central symbol of interstate friendship. A rising sun and radiating pale-blue field reinforce the optimistic visual language of socialist internationalism, while the lower white-enamel scroll bears the Mongolian inscription “Friendship.” The plain reverse retains its original safety-pin fastening and shows natural age and surface oxidation consistent with an early period example.

Early MPR–PRC friendship badges are considerably more difficult to encounter than the much larger body of Mongol-Soviet friendship insignia produced throughout the socialist era. Their historical window was narrower, and the deterioration of Sino-Mongolian relations after the early 1960s meant that imagery celebrating the bilateral relationship never developed into the same continuous mass series seen with Soviet themes. With its large format, handshake motif, national flags and heavy enamel construction, this is an especially evocative surviving piece from the formative decade of Mongolian–Chinese socialist friendship and a strong addition to a collection of early MPR political insignia, Cold War diplomacy or Sino-Mongolian relations.

https://khanmilitaria.com/products/1950s-mongolian-people-s-republic-people-s-republic-of-china-friendship-badge-rare-variation-original-issue
