The timing is particularly significant: the Ministry of Forestry and Wood Industry was established in 1972, bringing forestry, timber production and related activities into a dedicated ministerial structure, while the same year saw the creation of the Forest and Hunting Production Research Institute to develop forestry, hunting management, timber harvesting and processing on a more scientific and industrial basis. By the socialist period the sector had become an important part of Mongolia’s planned economy; its roots reached back to the establishment of a state Forest and Timber Department in 1924, while professional forestry workers began to be trained domestically from 1944 and forestry engineers from 1964.
