Rare original Mongolian People’s Republic State Security 50th Anniversary Medal, created for the jubilee of the country’s state-security organs and issued for the 1972 anniversary. The initials У.А.Х.Б. on the medal refer to the Mongolian state-security organs, the institution broadly comparable in function to the Soviet KGB. The award was formally established by decree of the Presidium of the Great People’s Khural on 29 December 1971 for the 50th anniversary celebrations.

Importantly, this was not simply a commemorative souvenir distributed to everyone connected with the service. The official award regulations specified that it was to be presented to selected serving officers and senior enlisted personnel who were productively serving in the Ministry of Public Security and its subordinate organs, as well as to veterans who had personally participated in the establishment of the state-security organs or had completed long and productive service before retirement. Candidates were formally recommended to the Ministry of Public Security by the appropriate organizations. This restricted recipient group gives the medal considerably greater historical significance than ordinary MPR anniversary decorations.

The decoration has an elaborate multi-part design: a radiating ten-point composition with alternating gilt and silvered/oxidized rays, a deep blue enamel central shield crossed vertically by a sword, and the large red-enamel numeral “50.” Around the center are the initials У.А.Х.Б, with green enamel laurel branches below. It is suspended from the distinctive geometric enameled suspension incorporating a small red star. This example is additionally accompanied by its correct red-and-green service ribbon bar, whose colors correspond to the officially prescribed ribbon for the medal. Complete examples of this medal are very scarce, particularly when retaining the original enamel suspension and accompanying ribbon bar. A well-preserved complete set such as this is an especially desirable piece for an advanced collection of Mongolian intelligence, state-security, Cold War, or socialist-period awards.

https://khanmilitaria.com/products/1972-mongolian-state-security-kgb-50th-anniversary-medal-with-ribbon-rare-official-issue
