A rare original 1982 Mongolian State Security 60th Anniversary Badge, issued to commemorate six decades of Mongolia’s intelligence and counterintelligence service, whose institutional history dates to the creation of the Internal Protection Department in 1922. By the socialist period, the State Security organization operated within the Ministry of Public Security and performed the country’s principal foreign intelligence, counterintelligence and state-security functions, maintaining particularly close professional cooperation with the Soviet security services and those of other socialist states. Anniversary badges of this class were intended for the comparatively closed community of state-security officers and personnel, following the same professional tradition as Soviet KGB jubilee insignia rather than ordinary public commemoratives.

The badge is a substantial Soviet Mint-produced multi-piece gilt and silvered metal construction with enamel, centered on the classic security-service sword motif against a deep green field. A red five-pointed star at the top incorporates Mongolia’s Soyombo, combining Soviet-era security symbolism with a distinctly Mongolian national emblem. The large gilt “60” marks the 1922–1982 jubilee, while the lower red enamel scroll carries the abbreviated designation of the Mongolian State Security organization. The screwback construction, layered metalwork and rich red-and-green enamel are characteristic of the higher-quality Soviet-produced Mongolian departmental insignia of the period.

This 60th-anniversary issue represents the mature Cold War period of Mongolian state security, when cooperation with Soviet and allied socialist intelligence services was particularly well established. With its direct intelligence-service attribution, Soviet Mint manufacture, restricted departmental character and unmistakable sword-and-Soyombo design, this is an excellent original piece for an advanced collection of Mongolian intelligence, KGB-associated, Cold War or state-security insignia.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0799/1256/7096/files/IMG_5945_7814b4f0-a2ca-4526-be5b-59b7736b96c3.jpg?v=1792086100
https://khanmilitaria.com/products/1982-mongolian-state-security-kgb-60th-anniversary-badge-intelligence-service-rare-original-issue
