A rare original 1985 Mongolian People’s Republic badge commemorating the 40th anniversary of victory over German fascism and Japanese militarism, an anniversary that carried particular meaning in Mongolia because the country’s wartime experience connected both the European and Far Eastern fronts. From the opening of the German-Soviet war in June 1941, the MPR committed itself firmly to the Soviet war effort, supplying enormous quantities of horses, clothing, food and raw materials and financing the “Revolutionary Mongolia” tank brigade and “Mongol Ard” fighter squadron. Mongolia then entered the war directly against Japan on 10 August 1945, when the government declared war and the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Army advanced alongside Soviet forces in the campaign through Inner Mongolia and northern China. The 1985 jubilee therefore commemorated not simply a Soviet anniversary imported into Mongolia, but the conclusion of a war in which the MPR had first served as one of the USSR’s most important wartime supporters and then as an active Allied combatant in the Far East.

The badge is a substantial gilt-metal and enamel circular issue, its outer legend reading “40 Years Since the Victory over German Fascism and Japanese Militarism.” A red five-pointed star bearing the hammer and sickle crowns the central shield, while red enamel details, a surrounding laurel wreath and the large raised numeral “40” give the design the formal character of an official jubilee commemorative rather than an ordinary souvenir pin. The imagery deliberately combines Soviet victory symbolism with Mongolian manufacture and inscription, reflecting the exceptionally close military and political relationship of the two socialist states. The plain gilt reverse retains its original horizontal safety-pin fastening and shows natural age, toning and handling consistent with a genuine period example.

Among late MPR victory commemoratives, this 40th-anniversary type is especially interesting because it explicitly joins the defeat of Germany and Japan in a single Mongolian inscription. That wording encapsulates Mongolia’s distinctive Second World War narrative: material support for the Soviet struggle in Europe followed by direct participation in the final campaign against Japan. Surviving examples appear much less frequently than the numerous general Soviet-Mongolian friendship and anniversary pins of the 1980s, making this a strong piece for a collection of Mongolian People’s Republic military history, World War II commemoratives, Soviet-Mongolian relations or socialist-era victory insignia.

https://khanmilitaria.com/products/1985-mongolian-people-s-republic-victory-over-german-fascism-japanese-militarism-40th-anniversary-badge-rare-original-issue
