A rare original Mongolian General Intelligence Agency 5th Department Military Counterintelligence 80th Anniversary Badge, issued in 2012 to mark eight decades of Mongolia’s organized military counterintelligence service. The lineage dates to 1932, when a Military Special Department was established alongside the 2nd Cavalry Corps in eastern Mongolia and military counterintelligence units were organized with the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th Divisions as the Japanese military and intelligence presence expanded immediately beyond Mongolia’s eastern frontier. Military counterintelligence subsequently developed as part of Mongolia’s state-security and intelligence structure, charged with protecting the armed forces against hostile intelligence activity and safeguarding military security. The General Intelligence Agency’s own published reference identifies this particular jubilee insignia as the 5th Department 80th Anniversary Badge, while the same distinctive departmental emblem continues across the 70th and 90th anniversary issues of Mongolia’s military counterintelligence service.

The badge is a substantial gilt-metal shield & sword with a deep blue enamel field. At the center is the characteristic black banner emblem, the same visual device carried by other anniversary insignia from the military counterintelligence lineage. A white enamel panel bearing the number 80 marks the jubilee, while laurel ornament and the lower scroll complete the composition. The reverse retains its original screwpost attachment and circular retaining plate, giving the piece the solid construction associated with internally issued Mongolian security-service insignia.

Department-specific material from Mongolia’s intelligence establishment is substantially less encountered than general armed-forces or police insignia, particularly pieces belonging to specialized security units with a comparatively small professional membership. This 80th-anniversary badge is especially significant because it sits directly between the known 70th and 90th Military Counterintelligence anniversary issues, preserving the same institutional emblem. An excellent example for an advanced collection of Mongolian intelligence, counterintelligence, state-security, or international secret-service insignia.

https://khanmilitaria.com/products/mongolian-intelligence-agency-5th-department-80th-anniversary-badge-rare-original-issue
