The Academy traces its institutional history to 1921, when the Presidium of the VChK established permanent courses for the training of operational personnel; the first class of 150 students began instruction on 27 April of that year. From those early state-security courses developed the successive training institutions of the OGPU, NKVD and Soviet security system, culminating in the Higher School of the KGB named after F. E. Dzerzhinsky. In 1992, that school and the Academy of Border Troops formed the basis of the new security-service academy, today the principal multidisciplinary higher-education institution of the FSB, training operational, counterintelligence, investigative, technical and information-security personnel. The 1921–2021 centenary therefore marked a full century of the institutional training tradition behind Soviet and Russian state-security officers, rather than simply the anniversary of the Academy’s modern name.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe design is exceptionally imposing, measuring approximately 13 cm in height and constructed as a heavy, multi-piece presentation emblem. At its center is the Academy’s shield with the mounted Saint George defeating the dragon, backed by the sword traditionally associated with the security services and surmounted by two crowned double-headed eagle. Broad gilt wings create the principal body of the composition, crossed by a deep blue enamel scroll carrying the centenary dates “1921–2021,” while the raised numeral “100” dominates the central shield. A second blue-enamel cartouche below reads Academy. The combination of gilt surfaces, silver-toned shield, red enamel and dark blue enamel gives the piece the monumental character expected of a senior institutional presentation item rather than a conventional wearable anniversary badge. The reverse of this large variation carries two substantial screw fittings intended for secure mounting, confirming its function as the principal emblem of such a presentation display.
