A scarce numbered Russian public award, the St. Archangel Michael Medal “For the Strength of the Russian Spirit,” issued within the award tradition associated with the Federal Public Program “Let Us Magnify Russia Through Our Deeds,” established in 2002. The program created a group of public distinctions intended to recognize individuals whose professional, civic, cultural, educational, and social work was regarded as contributing to the strengthening of Russia and the revival of its spiritual and national life. Contemporary records place this medal among awards received by distinguished educators, cultural figures, civic leaders, and senior industrial or organizational figures, making it a selective recognition rather than an ordinary commemorative or membership medal.

The medal carries a finely rendered image of St. Archangel Michael, one of the principal warrior-archangel figures of the Orthodox tradition, surrounded by the inscription “For the Strength of the Russian Spirit – St. Archangel Michael.” It is suspended from a Russian-style pentagonal mount with a striking blue ribbon edged in white and centered by black and gold stripes. The reverse bears a raised cross and, most importantly, the individually applied serial number No. 17. Such an exceptionally low number places this example very early within the numbered sequence and gives it considerably greater collector interest than an unnumbered or later-numbered example.

Numbered examples of this medal appear only infrequently on the secondary market, while period references confirm the decoration in the award records of recognized Russian public figures from the 2000s onward. The combination of the very low two-digit serial No. 17, original ribbon and suspension, substantial medal construction, and distinctive Archangel Michael imagery makes this an especially desirable example for an advanced collection of modern Russian awards, public decorations, Orthodox-themed phaleristics, or post-Soviet medal systems.

https://khanmilitaria.com/products/russian-st-archangel-michael-for-the-strength-of-the-russian-spirit-medal-low-serial-no-017-rare-original-issue
