1950s Mongolian People’s Republic “Excellent Police Officer” Badge Type 1 – Rare Original Issue

Original Item – Only One Available. An exceptionally scarce Type 1 “Excellent Police Officer” badge of the Mongolian People’s Republic, representing the earliest pattern of one of socialist Mongolia’s principal law-enforcement distinctions. The badge recognized police personnel distinguished by exemplary performance, professional experience and achievement in service. Mongolia’s official police history records that the first national conference of outstanding police officers and firefighters was held in 1957, when selected personnel were formally awarded the distinction by ministerial order. The title remained part of the police award system for decades before being renamed “Glory of the Police” in 1996.

The badge is an elaborate multipiece composition built on a silver-toned, shield-shaped base covered in rich cobalt-blue enamel. Above is the enameled flag of the Mongolian People’s Republic, while the large central gilt medallion presents an unusually detailed panorama of the state emblem of MPR, a mounted horseman beneath the rising sun, livestock portraits and the abbreviation БНМАУ, all enclosed by traditional hammer ornament. Gilt grain sprays rise from the lower border around a small red-enamel cartouche bearing the initials “О.С.” for Онц сэргийлэгч. The reverse retains its original threaded screwpost and broad circular retaining nut prominently marked “МОНЕТНЫЙ ДВОР”, an important production feature of this early officially manufactured issue.

Condition is very good and completely honest for an issued badge approaching seventy years of age. The blue, red and pale-blue enamel remains vivid, with expected surface marks, minor edge wear and small age-related imperfections visible in the photographs; the gilt relief remains strong and the original attachment system is complete. Far less frequently encountered than the later Type 2 & Type 3, this early mint-marked badge is a difficult and historically substantial piece for an advanced collection of Mongolian police insignia, socialist law-enforcement awards or early postwar MPR decorations.
