Description

Original Item – Only One Available. A very rare early Mongolian People’s Republic “Outstanding Herder” badge. In the Mongolia of the 1950s, animal husbandry remained central to the national economy, and exemplary herders were promoted as models of socialist labor achievement. Contemporary Mongolian material from 1952 specifically describes “Outstanding Herder” as the example other herders were expected to follow in increasing livestock, improving husbandry and fulfilling the state Five-Year Plan. This badge therefore belongs to a particularly important class of MPR labor distinctions: awards that recognized the individual herder not simply for long service, but for performance considered worthy of national imitation.

The design is exceptionally elaborate for an agricultural badge. A mounted herder dominates a pastoral landscape of grazing livestock, open steppe and mountains, framed by gilt agricultural foliage and a translucent red border beneath the socialist red star. Across the lower banner appears “Outstanding Herder,” while the upper field carries the period abbreviation “У.Б.М.Т.” This example is the collector-classified Variation 1 with the dark-blue sky, the least frequently encountered enamel treatment within this badge type; the much deeper blue gives the landscape noticeably stronger contrast than the more commonly seen lighter-sky examples. The badge retains the screwpost assembly and a period screw plate marked “Moscow Artists’ Cooperative”, a documented Soviet manufacturer of high-quality enamel insignia whose fittings also appear on other early Mongolian awards. The surfaces show honest period handling and fine age-related enamel wear while retaining strong color and considerable visual depth.

For the advanced Mongolia collector, this is considerably more desirable than the standard later herder awards. The combination of early socialist agricultural symbolism and the scarce dark-sky Variation 1 places it among the more difficult versions of the Outstanding Herder series to secure. Surviving historical accounts show how seriously the MPR treated elite herders: national herder conferences brought together the country’s highest-performing livestock workers, who were publicly recognized and in some periods received valuable additional gifts alongside their badges. A particularly strong original example for an advanced collection of Mongolian labor awards, agricultural insignia, early MPR badges, or socialist-era pastoral history.
