1950s Mongolian People’s Republic & Soviet Union Cultural Society “Friendship” Badge – Rare Variation, Original Issue

Original Item – Only One Available. A rare early badge of the Mongolian–Soviet Cultural Society, carrying the abbreviated inscription “МЗСН” and belonging to the formative first period of organized Mongol-Soviet cultural relations. The society traced its origins to 1947, when Mongolia’s first public organization devoted to cultural relations with the Soviet Union was established by leading intellectuals and cultural figures. Its work centered on Soviet literature, arts, education, language, exhibitions and cultural exchange, helping make relations with the USSR part of everyday public life in the young Mongolian People’s Republic. In 1955 the organization was reorganized and renamed the Mongolian–Soviet Friendship Society, МЗНН, whose badges became far more familiar during the following socialist decades. 

The badge is a substantial brass and multicolor enamel issue built around the intertwined flags of the Soviet Union and Mongolian People’s Republic. The upper red banner carries the Soviet star, hammer and sickle, while the Mongolian flag below is rendered in red and blue with its Soyombo emblem; a gilt grain spray rises from the lower left and a ribbon panel across the base bears the early “МЗСН” initials. Deep red and blue enamel, exposed gilt relief and the layered flag composition give the badge the heavy, purposeful appearance associated with Mongolia’s better early postwar insignia. 

For the specialist collector, the importance of this piece lies as much in the initials as in the design. The earlier МЗСН types represent the brief institutional stage before the friendship society name became standard. An original example therefore fills an unusually early place in a chronological collection of Mongol-Soviet friendship insignia, documenting the transition from postwar cultural exchange to the enormous friendship movement that became one of the most visible organizations of socialist Mongolia.
