Description

Original Item – Only One Available. A rare early Mongolian–Soviet friendship badge, dating from the formative postwar period in which relations between the Mongolian People’s Republic and the USSR were being developed not only through state and military ties, but through organized cultural diplomacy on a mass scale. Mongolia’s friendship organization traced its establishment to 22 May 1947 and, by the mid-1950s, operated as the Society of Mongol-Soviet Friendship, promoting Soviet culture, education, science and direct contacts throughout the MPR; the corresponding Society of Soviet-Mongolian Friendship was formally organized in Moscow in 1958. These early friendship organizations became an important public face of one of the closest relationships within the socialist world. A substantial enameled badge of this period is therefore fundamentally different, it belongs to the first generation of insignia associated with the institutional development of Mongol-Soviet friendship.

The badge is an unusually elaborate two-piece suspended construction, with the upper pin bar carrying the inscription “Friendship.” Below hangs a large gilt-metal and multicolor enamel medallion built around the central image of a handshake between the flags of the Soviet Union and the Mongolian People’s Republic, one bearing the hammer and sickle and the other the Mongolian national colors and Soyombo. Above them rises a radiant five-pointed star, while a gilt wreath frames the lower composition and a traditional hammer pattern border encircles the upper field. The plain reverse retains its original period pin assembly and shows natural age and wear consistent with an early, genuinely used example.

Early Mongol-Soviet friendship material occupies a particularly interesting place in Mongolian faleristics because it records the period when “Friendship” became an institutional concept as well as a political slogan. The movement grew into one of the MPR’s largest public organizations and later generated numerous simpler badges, commemoratives and international friendship issues; the early suspended types are far less frequently encountered and considerably more substantial in both manufacture and symbolism. For a collection centered on the Mongolian People’s Republic, Soviet–Mongolian relations, Cold War diplomacy, or early socialist friendship organizations, this is an exceptionally decorative and historically significant original piece.
