Original Item – Only One Available. A rare early Mongolian People’s Republic–Soviet Union friendship badge, dating from the 1950s, when Mongol-Soviet friendship was becoming one of the defining institutions of public life in the MPR. The relationship had been formally renewed through the 1946 Treaty of Friendship and Mutual Assistance, while Mongolia established its first organized society for cultural relations with the Soviet Union in 1947; in 1955 this became the Society of Mongol-Soviet Friendship, which subsequently developed into one of the country’s largest mass organizations. Early badges from this formative period are markedly different from the numerous lightweight friendship pins of the later socialist decades: they were produced in heavier metal, with substantial enamel work and a much more restrained, formal visual language.
This example is built around the most direct symbol of the alliance, the intertwined national flags of the USSR and the Mongolian People’s Republic. The upper red flag carries the Soviet hammer and sickle beneath a five-pointed star, while the lower Mongolian flag displays the Soyombo and star against its red-and-blue field. The two flags overlap within a tall rectangular gilt-metal frame, their poles running together through the composition to emphasize the political and ideological partnership of the two states. Deep red, blue and pale enamel contrast strongly with the exposed gilt relief, while the plain reverse retains its original period safety-pin fastening and shows the natural toning expected of a genuine early example.
Among Mongol-Soviet friendship insignia, these early heavy-enamel flag types are considerably harder to encounter than the later МЗНН and general “Friendship” badges produced in much larger numbers during the 1970s–1980s. Their simple construction and concentrated symbolism belong to the first generation of postwar friendship material, before the movement developed the extensive range of anniversary, society and international-exchange insignia familiar to collectors today. For a collection of early Mongolian People’s Republic badges, Soviet-Mongolian relations, socialist friendship organizations or Cold War political insignia, this is a particularly attractive and scarce original type.
