A rare original 1st Class archery sports qualification badge of the Mongolian People’s Republic, dating from the 1960s, the decade in which Mongolian archery was being reorganized into a modern state sporting discipline. The MPR’s unified sports classification system had introduced formal sporting ranks for archery in 1955, followed by the establishment of an organized archery association in 1959 and the beginning of national championship competitions in 1960. First Class therefore represented a genuine performance qualification within Mongolia’s state-controlled physical-culture system rather than a commemorative distinction, awarded to an archer who had achieved the prescribed competitive standard. This early ranking system helped transform Mongolia’s centuries-old bow tradition into an organized socialist-era sport with formal classes, championships and nationally recognized sporting titles.

The badge is a substantial gilt-metal and enamel issue centered on one of Mongolia’s most recognizable national symbols: a vertical Soyombo set against a deep blue enamel field, crossed horizontally by a fully drawn bow and arrow. Beneath it appears the large numeral “1”, identifying the highest numbered sporting class, while the lower red-enamel panel carries “Class.” A finely modelled gilt laurel wreath surrounds the entire composition, giving the badge the formal appearance associated with higher sporting qualifications rather than an ordinary participation pin. The plain gilt reverse retains its original horizontal safety-pin fastening and shows natural age and surface toning.

The 1st Class issue is the senior numbered badge in this archery qualification series, making it considerably more desirable than the lower 2nd- and 3rd-class types when assembling a complete set of Mongolian sporting ranks. Its combination of the Soyombo, traditional bow and arrow, socialist sporting-rank terminology and heavy enamel construction makes it an especially characteristic piece of 1960s Mongolian sports history.
