Original Item – Only One Available. A rare early Mongolian People’s Republic–Cuba friendship badge, dating from the 1960s and belonging to the first decade of formal relations between two geographically distant states brought together by the socialist world. Mongolia and revolutionary Cuba established diplomatic relations on 7 December 1960, making Cuba the first country in the Americas to establish diplomatic relations with the MPR; resident embassies followed in 1962. The same year saw the establishment of the Mongolia–Cuba Friendship Society, which became an important vehicle for cultural exchange and public diplomacy between Ulaanbaatar and Havana. This badge belongs squarely to that formative period, before Mongolian–Cuban friendship developed into the broader series of anniversary and society insignia encountered in the 1970s and 1980s.

The badge is a substantial gilt-metal and multicolor enamel issue, dominated by the intertwined flags of the Republic of Cuba and the Mongolian People’s Republic. Cuba’s blue-and-white striped flag with its red triangle and white star stands beside the MPR tricolor carrying the Soyombo, their overlapping staffs visually joining the two countries beneath the socialist-era imagery of international friendship. Across the lower white-enamel scroll appears the Mongolian inscription “Friendship.” Deep blue, red and white enamel is separated by raised gilt outlines, while the irregular flag-shaped construction gives the piece considerably more character than a conventional circular commemorative pin. The plain gilt reverse retains its original safety-pin fastening and shows natural age, oxidation and handling consistent with an authentic early example.

Early Mongolia–Cuba friendship insignia are significantly less common than Mongol-Soviet material, reflecting the much smaller scale of the bilateral relationship and the comparatively limited number of institutional and commemorative issues produced. The 1960s are particularly desirable because they represent the very beginning of the relationship: diplomatic ties had only just been established, the friendship society was newly formed, and Cuba had become Mongolia’s first diplomatic partner in the Western Hemisphere.
