A rare group of four original Mongolian People’s Republic D. Natsagdorj portrait badges, associated with the long-running “D. Natsagdorj Badge Holder” distinction for outstanding young readers. The movement was already active among Mongolian pioneer students by 1960, when children were encouraged to qualify as D. Natsagdorj badge holders alongside other educational and cultural achievement programs. Contemporary records from the 1960s and 1970s likewise describe libraries selecting their strongest young readers as “D. Natsagdorj Badge Holder” showing that this was an established socialist-era reading and cultural distinction rather than simply a later commemorative souvenir.

The four badges offered here represent four distinct early portrait variations of Dashdorjiin Natsagdorj (1906–1937), one of the central figures in twentieth-century Mongolian culture and widely recognized as a founder of modern Mongolian literature. Each is fashioned in the form of a small book, with a raised gilt portrait of Natsagdorj in his characteristic brimmed hat against a deep red enamel field and “D. Natsagdorj” across the lower edge. Although sharing the same basic concept, the four pieces differ noticeably in portrait engraving, facial treatment, hat form, lettering, enamel tone, border construction and reverse pin fittings, making the group especially useful for illustrating the evolution of the type. 

Natsagdorj's cultural importance was given particularly strong official recognition during this period. In 1966, on the 60th anniversary of his birth, the MPR formally commemorated him as the founder of modern Mongolian literature, named the State Drama Theatre after him and adopted additional measures to perpetuate his memory. The D. Natsagdorj badge-holder tradition continued for decades; later regulations explicitly describe the award as including a badge bearing Natsagdorj's portrait and a certificate, preserving the same fundamental concept represented by these early pieces. Offered together, these four different early variations form a considerably more interesting group than a single example and are an excellent addition to collections of MPR pioneer organizations, Mongolian education and literary history, socialist youth awards, cultural badges and Cold War-era Mongolian insignia.
