A scarce matching pair of 1960s Mongolian People’s Republic New Year greeting badges, both carrying the inscription “Happy New Year.” The set belongs to the decade in which the modern socialist New Year became firmly established as one of Mongolia’s most recognizable public celebrations. The New Year Tree Celebration had already developed into an important children’s and community event, with Ulaanbaatar’s Palace New Year Tree celebration dating from 1958, while J. Badraa and S. Gonchigsumlaa’s famous Suld Modny Naadam song entered Mongolian New Year culture in 1962. By the 1960s the celebration had taken on a distinctly Mongolian identity rather than simply reproducing the Soviet Yolka tradition, and these badges belong directly to that formative period of MPR festive culture.

The two examples display subtle differences in enamel & color tone, detailing and manufacture, making them especially appealing as two period variations of the same design rather than duplicate badges.
