1960s Mongolian People’s Republic Khovsgol Province “Ten Days of Culture and Arts” Badge – Rare Original Issue

A rare original 1960s Mongolian People’s Republic badge issued for the Khovsgol Province “Ten Days of Culture and Arts”, a socialist-era cultural festival bringing together music, theatre, dance, literature, folk art and other artistic activities. Provincial ten-day cultural festivals were an established feature of Mongolian cultural life during this period, with aimags organizing large programs that could include concerts, theatrical performances, traditional music and dance, recitation, fine and applied arts, and exhibitions. Similar provincial ten-day cultural programs were already being held on a major scale by the end of the 1950s and into the 1960s.

The badge has an unusually elaborate design centered on a passenger vessel sailing across Lake Khovsgol, one of the province’s defining geographical symbols. The ship appears between deep blue theatrical curtains, visually combining the identity of Khovsgol with the performing arts, while decorative agricultural motifs flank the lower portion. The surrounding red enamel inscription reads “Ten Days of Culture and Arts”, with “Khovsgol” below. It is constructed in substantial gilt-colored metal with multicolored enamel and a separate rectangular red suspension bar, retaining its original period pin fastening.

This is considerably scarcer than the ordinary mass-produced MPR commemorative badges encountered on the market. Its combination of provincial history, Lake Khovsgol imagery, socialist cultural programming and high-quality enamel construction makes it an especially attractive piece for collections of Mongolian regional insignia, MPR cultural badges and Cold War-era Mongolian memorabilia.
