1962 Mongolian People’s Republic Sukhbaatar Province 20th Anniversary Badge – Rare Original Issue

Original Item – Only One Available. A rare original badge issued for the 20th anniversary of Sukhbaatar Aimag, dating the piece to 1962. The province was established in 1942 as Javkhlant Sharga Aimag, assembled from territories formerly administered by Dornod and Khentii, and was renamed for revolutionary leader Damdin Sukhbaatar the following year. Its creation formed part of the major wartime-era reorganization of Mongolia’s eastern administration, establishing a separate province across the Dariganga country and the southeastern frontier of the Mongolian People’s Republic. Early provincial anniversary insignia from this period occupy a particularly interesting corner of Mongolian collecting: they were produced for specific local state anniversaries and survive in considerably smaller numbers than the mass political issues of the 1970s and 1980s.

The badge is formed as a sweeping red-enamel banner inscribed “Sukhbaatar Aimag”, with the large white-enamel numeral “20” set over a green lower field. At right is a finely outlined Sukhbaatar figure in traditional dress, his arm extended across the composition, while agricultural imagery and a gilt branch along the base emphasize the province’s pastoral character and the socialist language of labor and development typical of early MPR commemorative insignia. The gilt-toned metal body, hand-finished enamel fields and simple period safety-pin construction are characteristic of substantial Mongolian badges of the era; the reverse remains untouched, with honest surface age, while the front retains attractive original red, green and white enamel.

The 20th-anniversary issue is one of the earlier Sukhbaatar provincial commemorative types, predating the much larger body of later socialist-era aimag and anniversary badges. Its relatively large format, figurative design and early 1960s manufacture give it considerably more presence than later lightweight regional pins, while the clearly named province and anniversary make its historical context immediately identifiable. For a specialist collection of Mongolian People’s Republic provincial insignia, early socialist badges, Sukhbaatar Aimag material or regional anniversary issues, this is a scarce and exceptionally characterful original piece from the first two decades of the province’s history.
