Description

An original 1969 “30th Anniversary of the Victory at Khalkhin Gol Medal”, an official state decoration of the Mongolian People’s Republic created for the first major jubilee of the 1939 Khalkhin Gol victory. The medal was formally instituted on 9 June 1969 by Decree No. 127 of the Presidium of the Great People’s Khural, commemorating thirty years since Mongolian and Soviet forces defeated Japanese and Manchukuo forces during the fighting along Mongolia’s eastern frontier. It was awarded for officers of the Mongolian People’s Army, Border Troops and State Security services in recognition of distinguished military service, and surviving participants in the 1939 campaign and others whose wartime service or labor contributed to the victory, giving the medal a direct connection to the generation that actually experienced Khalkhin Gol.

The medal is executed in brass with multicolored enamel, its design presenting one of the clearest visual expressions of Mongolian-Soviet military brotherhood in the MPR award system. A Mongolian cavalryman with drawn saber stands beside a Soviet Red Army soldier armed with rifle and fixed bayonet, both wearing headgear marked with small red-enamel stars. Above them appears “Khalkhin Gol”, while the lower ribbon carries the dates “1939–1969” between green-enamel laurel branches. The original triangular suspension bears the Roman numeral “XXX” in gilt against a blue-enamel center, flanked by red enamel, and retains its horizontal pin fastening. The reverse is characteristically plain, while the present example shows attractive original gilding, crisp relief and preserved enamel.

For the specialist collector, the 30th-anniversary issue occupies an especially important place within the Khalkhin Gol commemorative series. It was created only three decades after the fighting, while many Mongolian and Soviet veterans of the campaign were still alive and could be personally decorated. With its unmistakable paired Mongolian-Soviet soldiers, original enamel suspension and direct association with veterans of the 1939 Battle of Khalkhin Gol, this is an excellent piece for collections focused on Mongolian military history, the Mongolian People’s Army, Soviet-Mongolian relations, or Khalkhin Gol campaign awards.

The photographs show a representative example. You will receive one original medal of the same type and issue from our inventory. Minor variations in patina, finish, enamel, and wear may occur. We will select the best available example at the time of purchase.
