A rare First Class military-sports distinction of the Mongolian People’s Army, issued during the 1970s to recognize high achievement in the army’s organized physical and military-applied sports program. The inscription “Champion of Military Sports,” while the prominent Roman numeral “I” on the suspension identifies the superior First Class grade. Within the Mongolian People’s Republic, military sport was treated not simply as recreation but as part of a soldier’s physical conditioning, endurance, discipline, and combat preparation, a role that remains central to Mongolia’s military-sports tradition. The badge therefore represents an earned proficiency distinction from the Mongolian People’s Army, the armed forces of the socialist republic until 1992, rather than an ordinary civilian sporting souvenir.

The badge is constructed as a large circular bronze-toned pendant suspended from a rectangular red class bar. Its face carries an five-pointed star surrounding a white colored athlete. The separate suspension bar displays the gilt numeral “I,” immediately identifying the recipient’s First Class standing. The reverse is plain, as manufactured, and the original horizontal pin and suspension fittings remain present. The piece shows honest service wear, an aged patina, surface marks, most noticeably on the red class bar and lower scroll, but retains a strong, complete appearance with all principal details clearly defined.
