1970s Mongolian People’s Army Song & Dance Ensemble Badge – Rare Original Issue

Original Item – Only One Available. A scarce original early 1970s badge of the Mongolian People’s Army Song and Dance Ensemble. The ensemble formed an important part of the cultural life of the Mongolian armed forces, combining military music, choir, dance and stage performance. By the late 1960s and early 1970s it had developed into a major professional military arts organization; its male choir was reorganized in 1969, and an electric-music group was already operating within the ensemble around 1970.

The badge has a distinctive rectangular composition dominated by a red Soyombo-star emblem at the left and a musical staff running across the lower field, immediately identifying its connection with military music and performance. It is manufactured in metal with red, white and dark color details and retains its original period pin fastening on the reverse. The design and construction are characteristic of the more substantial MPR institutional badges produced during this period.

The Mongolian military ensemble itself has roots extending back to 1932 and passed through several official names before becoming the Mongolian People’s Army Song and Dance Ensemble; its contribution to the armed forces was recognized with the Order of Military Merit in 1962. Badges directly associated with the ensemble are considerably less frequently encountered than ordinary MPR army qualification and service badges, making this an especially attractive piece for collections of Mongolian military insignia, military music, MPR cultural organizations and Cold War-era armed-forces memorabilia.
