1970s Mongolian People’s Republic County & Town Council Deputy Badge – Rare Original Issue

Original Item – Only One Available. A rare original elected-official badge of the Mongolian People’s Republic, issued to a deputy serving in one of the country’s lower-level local representative councils. The inscription identifies the holder as a Deputy of a County, Town or Ward Council, soum being Mongolia’s second-level rural administrative unit beneath the aimag, for which official Mongolian English usage also employs “county,” while khoroo denotes an urban ward. These were not honorary titles: soum, town and khoroo People’s Deputies’ Khurals formed part of the MPR’s formal system of local representative government. The first elections of deputies to Mongolia’s local People’s Khurals in 1952 and a continuing sequence of local elections through the socialist period.

The badge is constructed in the form of a stylized Mongolian People’s Republic state flag, executed in gilt metal with rich translucent red enamel and blue enamel with inscription. The left side carries the period Soyombo, while the central field bears the local-government designation in raised gilt Mongolian lettering. The reverse retains its textured gilt finish and original horizontal pin fitting. The combination of political inscription, state symbolism and flag-shaped construction makes this a particularly recognizable piece of socialist Mongolian representative insignia rather than a commemorative or general membership badge.

For the specialist collector, this badge represents the local tier immediately below the provincial and city level: county (soum), local town and ward (khoroo) deputies were separately represented within the MPR system. As an original badge that identified an actual elected local representative, it is a strong historical piece for an advanced collection of Mongolian People’s Republic government insignia, socialist political badges, local-government memorabilia or Cold War-era Mongolian history.
