1970s Mongolian People’s Republic & North Korea Friendship Badge – Rare Original Issue

Original Item – Only One Available. A very scarce Cold War-era friendship badge representing the close state and political relationship between the Mongolian People’s Republic (MPR) and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). Mongolia was among the earliest states to establish diplomatic relations with North Korea, doing so on 15 October 1948. Their relationship subsequently developed through political delegations, cultural exchanges, trade, and official visits; Mongolian delegations continued visiting the DPRK throughout the 1970s, including government-level visits in 1975, 1978 and 1979. Friendship insignia formed part of the broader visual culture surrounding these socialist-era international relationships, and period Mongolian–North Korean friendship badges are documented in specialist collections, although numerous distinct designs and variations exist.

This particularly attractive example combines the national flags of the Mongolian People’s Republic and North Korea in a flowing, overlapping composition. The Mongolian section displays the gilt Soyombo emblem against translucent red enamel, while the DPRK flag is represented through its characteristic red, blue and pale divisions with the central red star. The badge is constructed in gilt-colored metal with separately defined enamel fields and retains its period pin fastening on the reverse. Its workmanship, enamel treatment, textured fields and reverse construction are characteristic of Mongolian socialist-period badge manufacture. 

The surviving translucent enamels remain visually impressive, with age-related surface wear and minor imperfections consistent with an original period piece. An excellent acquisition for a collection of Mongolian People’s Republic insignia, DPRK political memorabilia, socialist friendship badges, Cold War diplomacy, or Asian communist-era historical artifacts.
