An extremely rare 2nd Class Service Dog Trainer badge of the Mongolian People’s Republic Police, belonging to one of the smallest and most specialized branches of the socialist-era law-enforcement system. Mongolia’s police began formally using specially trained dogs for criminal investigation and public-order duties in 1944, when the Ministry of Internal Affairs established a dedicated Fourth Special Section incorporating both forensic and tracking-dog functions; from 1944 until 1990, specialist personnel for the service were also trained in the Soviet Union. By the 1970s this had developed into a mature operational specialty: one celebrated example, the police dog Ruslan, returned from training in the USSR in 1971, served for a decade in Darkhan and was credited with assisting in the solution of more than 130 serious crimes.

The badge is a substantial screwback construction in gilt metal and multicolored, with broad white wings carrying police red and blue color details around a tall pale-green central field. At center is the finely modeled head of a German shepherd, the breed historically favored by Mongolian police for its endurance, trainability and suitability for operational work, with the gilt numeral “2” above and the green scroll “Trainer” below. The reverse retains its original threaded post and large circular screw plate marked, identifying Ulaanbaatar Mint manufacture. The condition is especially attractive, with strong white, red, blue and green color, while light surface wear and toning are entirely consistent with an issued badge of this period.

For the specialist collector, the significance of this piece lies in its narrow occupational purpose and three-class qualification system. The complete 1st, 2nd and 3rd Class Dog Trainer series is so infrequently encountered.
