Description

Original Item – Only One Available. A rare original badge issued to an elected deputy of an Aimag or City People’s Khural in the Mongolian People’s Republic, bearing the inscription “Deputy of the Aimag & City Khural.” The formal socialist-era bodies were the Aimag and City People’s Deputies’ Khurals, the principal representative authorities at provincial and city level. Under the 1960 Constitution, these local Khurals were elected by the population for fixed terms and exercised authority over local economic, cultural and political administration, approved local plans and budgets, supervised subordinate administrative bodies and adopted decisions within their legal jurisdiction.

The badge takes the form of a stylized Mongolian People’s Republic flag, with translucent red enamel flanking a blue central panel. The left field carries the period Soyombo state emblem, while the central blue field bears the full gilt inscription “Deputy of the Aimag & City Khural.” Unlike a commemorative or institutional souvenir badge, this piece identified the wearer’s status as an elected local representative. The reverse has an attractive patterned gilt surface and retains its original horizontal pin fastening. The translucent enamel remains particularly vivid, with only light age-related wear consistent with an original period-issued badge.

For the specialist collector, this is an interesting piece of MPR political and administrative insignia because it represents actual local representative office rather than membership in a mass organization or an anniversary event. Aimag and city Khurals occupied an important level in Mongolia’s territorial government structure: the Constitution explicitly placed them above lower-level local Khurals in the administrative hierarchy and gave higher People’s Deputies’ Khurals authority over decisions of subordinate bodies. Surviving deputy insignia therefore provide a tangible link to the functioning of Mongolia’s socialist-era local government. A strong original example for an advanced collection of Mongolian political badges, MPR government insignia, socialist parliamentary memorabilia or Cold War-era administrative history.
