A rare original 1970s honorary departmental badge of the Ulaanbaatar City Police Department, the capital’s police organization traces its institutional history to 1926, when a city police body was established under the Ulaanbaatar administration, and it was expanded into a full police department in 1928. During the 1960s–70s it expanded rapidly as Ulaanbaatar grew: a dedicated patrol unit was organized in 1965, radio communications were introduced in 1968, motorcycle patrol regulations followed in 1974, and a crime-prevention department was created in 1979. This places the badge squarely within an important period when the capital’s police service was becoming a larger and increasingly specialized urban security organization.

The badge is an imposing suspended construction centered on a large circular brass medallion. Around the border appears the complete institutional title, surrounding a raised equestrian image of Damdin Sukhbaatar, the revolutionary figure whose mounted monument dominated the ceremonial center of the Mongolian capital. A small shield device at the base reinforces the departmental character of the piece, while the upper suspension is finished in broad blue with narrow red stripes, echoing the national colors of the MPR period. The reverse is plain and retains its original horizontal pin fastening. The surfaces show natural toning and honest handling wear, exactly the appearance expected from an original issued departmental decoration rather than a modern commemorative reproduction.
