An original 1971 50th Anniversary of the Mongolian People’s Revolution Medal, an official honorary state decoration created for one of the most important jubilees of the Mongolian People’s Republic. Instituted by decree of the Presidium of the Great People’s Khural on 9 June 1970, the medal commemorated fifty years since the Revolution of 1921, the event from which socialist Mongolia traced the creation of its new revolutionary government and the political order that developed into the Mongolian People’s Republic. It was awarded not merely as an anniversary souvenir, but to Mongolian citizens with significant service to the country and the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party through party and state work, public activity, and contributions to the economic and defense strength of the MPR; foreign citizens who had rendered major services to Mongolia were also eligible. This broad statute makes the 50th Anniversary Medal particularly representative of the MPR establishment at its height, connecting political leaders, public figures, military personnel and prominent foreign friends of Mongolia within a single state jubilee award.

Produced by the Moscow Mint, the medal is a substantial gilt-brass and enamel construction built around one of the most recognizable symbols of the revolutionary Mongolian state. A translucent red-enamel five-pointed star dominates the center, with the gilt Soyombo rising vertically within it and the dates “1921–1971” across the lower arm. Behind the red star is a second radiating gilt star, giving the decoration unusual depth and a strong ceremonial appearance. The original suspension is finished in matching deep red enamel divided by five narrow gilt vertical stripes, exactly reflecting the prescribed design of the 50th-anniversary issue, and retains its original horizontal pin fastening. The present example retains rich translucent enamel, strong original gilding and sharply defined Soyombo detail, with only honest period wear from an original issued decoration.

For the specialist collector, the 50th Anniversary issue represents the great 1971 jubilee of the Mongolian People’s Revolution at the mature point of the country’s socialist period. The anniversary was celebrated on a national scale through state ceremonies, cultural events, publications and military displays, reflecting the enormous institutional importance attached to the revolutionary tradition by the MPR. Its international dimension is equally important: senior Soviet commanders received the medal alongside Mongolian recipients, including Army General Ivan Pavlovsky. With its Moscow Mint manufacture, striking red-star and Soyombo design, original enamel suspension and direct connection to the principal state jubilee of 1971, this is an excellent representative of Cold War-era Mongolian state faleristics and a natural companion to the later 60th and 70th Anniversary People’s Revolution medals.
