Description

Original Item – Only One Available. An original delegate badge of the 16th Congress of the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party, held in Ulaanbaatar from 7–11 June 1971 and attended by 784 delegates. Convened at the height of Yumjaagiin Tsedenbal’s leadership and only a month before the 50th anniversary of the Mongolian People’s Revolution, the congress set the economic and cultural program of the Mongolian People’s Republic for 1971–1975, approving the directives of the Fifth Five-Year Plan at a period of especially close political and economic integration with the Soviet Union. The Soviet delegation was headed by CPSU Politburo member Andrei Kirilenko, while representatives from dozens of foreign parties attended the proceedings. Unlike the enormous quantities of anniversary and friendship badges produced for public distribution during this period, congress delegate insignia were connected directly with participation in the highest regular assembly of Mongolia’s ruling party, giving surviving examples a much more specific institutional provenance.

The badge is a striking example of early-1970s MPRP congress design, built around a sweeping red-enamel banner carrying the raised inscription “MPRP 16th Congress”. The reverse is plain gilt-toned with its original horizontal safety-pin fastening, retaining the fine surface texture and light traces of age expected from an authentic period piece. The enamel remains exceptionally vivid, with strong gloss and crisp separation between the red, pale and gilt elements.

For the specialist, the 16th Congress badge represents an important stage in the chronological series of MPRP delegate insignia, immediately preceding the more elaborate congress designs of the later 1970s and 1980s. The congress itself marked the beginning of Mongolia’s Fifth Five-Year Plan and belonged squarely to the mature Tsedenbal period, when the MPRP exercised complete political authority over the socialist republic. Original delegate badges from these national congresses are substantially more difficult to encounter than ordinary MPRP membership, commemorative and propaganda pins, making this a particularly strong piece for a collection of Mongolian political history, socialist-era party insignia, or Cold War faleristics.
