These rare official 1972 Special Regiment badges commemorate the 50th anniversary of one of Mongolia’s earliest and most historically important internal security formations. The origins of the unit trace back to July 16, 1922, when a special detachment was formed under the newly established Internal Protection organization by order of General Damdin Sükhbaatar, marking the foundation of Mongolia’s Internal Troops history.

Throughout the socialist era, the regiment evolved from a small mounted security detachment into a major special regiment responsible for internal security, protection of state leadership, guard duties for strategically important government facilities, and security for foreign delegations visiting Mongolia. During different historical periods, the formation was expanded into battalions, cavalry units, and later motorized special regiments reflecting the growing security demands of the Mongolian state during the Cold War.

The badge features two known portrait variations of an armed serviceman with bright socialist-era enamel construction and the commemorative dates “1922–1972.” Official badges connected to Mongolia’s internal security and special troops were produced in relatively limited quantities and rarely reached the international collector market. Today, surviving original examples are highly desirable among collectors specializing in Mongolian internal troops, and communist-era security force memorabilia.
