Established in 1974 under the KGB and carried forward into the modern Russian security apparatus, Alpha has been at the forefront of the state’s most sensitive and dangerous operations, earning a reputation as one of the world’s most formidable special forces units.

The badge is designed in the traditional sword-and-shield style, with a bold red enamel field, the double-headed eagle of the Russian Federation, and the large letter “A” encircled by a laurel wreath.
