A rare original 40th Anniversary table medal of the Mongolian Geological Service, produced in 1979 at a particularly important moment in Mongolia’s geological and industrial history. Mongolia officially traces its national Geological Service to 6 October 1939, when the Council of Ministers established the state organization responsible for mineral exploration and development; by its fortieth anniversary, those decades of systematic geological work had helped identify and develop deposits that transformed the country’s economy. Foremost among them was Erdenet-Ovoo, discovered in 1963 through Mongolian-Czechoslovak geological work and subsequently subjected to detailed Soviet exploration. The joint Mongolian-Soviet Erdenet complex began production in December 1978, with its first copper-molybdenum concentrate produced on 14 December, less than a year before this medal was issued.

The medal itself makes that connection exceptional. Across its upper reverse is the explicit inscription “Erdenet’s First Copper,” identifying the copper used for this commemorative piece with the first production of the newly opened Erdenet complex. Beneath it appears the date “1979.10.9” and “40 Years of the Geological Service.” The opposite face presents a finely engraved outline of Mongolia marked “БНМАУ” (Mongolian People’s Republic), surrounded by the working symbols of the geologist: a drilling derrick, geological hammer/pick, compass and faceted mineral specimens, all enclosed within a traditional Mongolian hammer pattern border. The large approximately 60 mm format and solid copper construction give the piece the substantial character expected of an institutional table medal.
