1980s Mongolian People’s Republic “Battle of Khalkhin Gol Victory” Commemorative Badge – Rare Heavy Brass Variation, Official Issue

A rare heavy-metal Khalkh Gol commemorative badge of the Mongolian People’s Republic, honoring the 1939 battles in which Mongolian and Soviet forces defeated the Japanese-Manchukuo armies on Mongolia’s eastern frontier. Khalkhin Gol became one of the defining military victories of the MPR and a lasting symbol of Mongolian-Soviet military brotherhood, commemorated repeatedly through official medals, badges, monuments and major state anniversaries. The memory of the campaign remained especially prominent during the 1980s: the monumental Khalkhin Gol Victory Memorial at Hamardavaa was opened on 18 August 1984 for the 45th anniversary of the victory, following a joint Mongolian-Soviet design project begun in 1981. This badge belongs to that wider late-socialist tradition of preserving Khalkhin Gol as both a national military victory and a symbol of the alliance between the Mongolian People’s Army and the Soviet Armed Forces.

This is the scarcer heavy brass variation, substantially different in construction from the lightweight aluminum version of the same basic Khalkh Gol design. The large multi-pointed star carries red enamel within its points, while the center joins the two unmistakable emblems of the allied states: the Mongolian Soyombo and Soviet hammer and sickle within interlocking circular devices. Beneath them appears “Khalkhin Gol”, with a rifle and saber crossed across the lower portion of the badge, combining the symbolism of the two armies with the martial imagery of the 1939 campaign. The substantial rectangular suspension is likewise finished in deep horizontally ribbed red and retains its original horizontal pin fastening. 

For the specialist collector, the importance of this example lies primarily in its heavy brass construction. The Khalkh Gol design is encountered more commonly in lightweight aluminum form, making the heavier production a separate and considerably more desirable manufacturing variation. For an advanced collection of Mongolian People’s Army insignia, Khalkhin Gol awards, Soviet-Mongolian military relations or Cold War-era Mongolian faleristics, this is an especially attractive and difficult-to-find variation.
