1980s Mongolian People’s Republic Defense Assistance Society “Golden Star” Honorary Badge – Soviet Mint, Official Issue

The Honorary Badge of the Society for Assistance to National Defense, one of the most important mass defense-preparedness organizations of the Mongolian People’s Republic. The organization adopted the УБХТН name in 1970 and, following its 1975 reorganization, operated throughout Mongolia as a nationwide voluntary society closely connected with the country’s defense and technical-training culture. By the socialist period it maintained branches across the country and trained drivers, marksmen, radio operators and parachutists while supporting shooting, motor, radio, aviation and other technical sports useful to national defense. The Honorary Badge represented one of the Society’s higher institutional distinctions, clearly identified on the piece itself by the inscription.

The badge is a substantial suspended construction with red, blue and white enamel. A large radiating five-pointed star forms the body, centered by a deep blue-enamel medallion bearing Mongolian People’s Republic / Society for Assistance to National Defense. The center is surrounded by a broad white-enamel ring, while the curved red-enamel scroll below carries the decisive inscription “Honorary Badge.” Above, the rectangular suspension is divided into Mongolia’s red-blue-red national colors and retains its original horizontal pin fastening. 

For the specialist collector, this badge is considerably more significant than an ordinary membership or technical-sports pin. УБХТН occupied the space between civilian society, military preparedness and specialist technical training, maintaining a nationwide organization whose activities fed directly into the practical skills required by the MPR defense establishment. In 1980, Soviet DOSAAF and Mongolian Defense Assistance Society concluded an agreement connected with the development of the Society’s driver-training infrastructure, illustrating the close relationship between the two countries’ parallel defense-assistance organizations. The combination of its explicit “Honorary Badge” designation, substantial ceremonial construction and direct association with Mongolia’s DOSAAF-type defense organization makes this a particularly desirable piece for collections of Mongolian People’s Republic militaria, Cold War paramilitary organizations, military-preparedness awards or Soviet-Mongolian institutional history.
