An original 1981 Armed Forces 60th Anniversary Medal, an official military decoration of the Mongolian People’s Republic commemorating six decades of the modern Mongolian armed forces. Mongolia traces the beginning of its modern military establishment to 1921, when the People’s Regular Army was organized during the revolution that restored the country’s sovereignty, making the 60th anniversary an important institutional milestone rather than simply a calendar jubilee. The decoration was associated with the wider military-security establishment of the MPR: awarded for personnel serving in the Mongolian People’s Army, Border Troops and State Security structures for distinguished military service, while documented Soviet generals and senior military officers were also decorated, reflecting the exceptionally close Soviet-Mongolian defense relationship of the period. 

Produced by the Moscow Mint, the medal is executed in brass with enamel and presents a deliberately restrained but powerful military design. The central red-enamel five-pointed star carries the Soyombo, MPR military emblem, while the inscription “Armed Forces” curves above and the large numeral “60” anchors the composition between laurel branches. The original suspension is finished with alternating red and narrow six blue enamel stripes and retains its horizontal pin fastening. The plain reverse and substantial gilt surfaces are characteristic of the issue, while the present example retains particularly strong original color, sharp relief and attractive overall preservation. With its Moscow Mint manufacture, official MPR military status and direct association with the Mongolian People’s Army, Border Troops, state-security services and Soviet military establishment, this is an excellent representative of late Cold War Mongolian military faleristics.
