Description
Original Item – Only One Available. A rare original Soviet Navy submarine badge dated 1983, associated with TK-12, the third vessel of the formidable Project 941 Akula class, known to NATO as the Typhoon class. Designed by the Rubin Central Design Bureau and constructed at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk, these nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines were the largest submarines ever built and represented the Soviet Union's most ambitious underwater strategic deterrent of the Cold War. TK-12, assigned construction number 713, was laid down on 19 April 1980 and launched on 17 December 1983, entering naval service on 26 December 1984. Armed with twenty R-39 submarine-launched ballistic missiles, the vessel subsequently served with the Northern Fleet's 18th Submarine Division, conducting strategic patrols in the Arctic and northern waters. The badge's Roman numeral III identifies TK-12 as the third hull of the Project 941 series, while the date 1983 corresponds to the submarine's launch year, making this a particularly distinctive early insignia associated with the vessel and its original generation of submariners.
The badge features an unusually striking, irregularly shaped composition dominated by a large black shark, the unmistakable symbol of the Project 941 Akula program, set against a light-blue enamel field. The shark is portrayed in a dynamic curved form, with white enamel accents defining its underside and a gilt trident rising along the right side. A deep-blue central panel carries the Roman numeral III, while an elongated red pennant bearing the date 1983 extends across the upper portion of the design. A gilt laurel wreath frames the composition, contrasting with the bold black, blue, red, and white enamelwork. The reverse retains its screwpost and circular securing plate, with considerable natural oxidation and age-related patination consistent with the badge's vintage appearance. The colored enamel remains largely intact, preserving the distinctive visual character of this early Project 941 insignia.
Ship-specific Soviet submarine badges occupy a particularly specialized field of naval collecting, preserving the identities of individual vessels and their crews rather than representing general fleet decorations. This example is associated with one of only six completed Project 941 submarines, a class that became an enduring symbol of Soviet strategic naval power. TK-12's subsequent operational career, followed by its withdrawal from service and eventual dismantling in 2006–2007, gives surviving insignia connected with the vessel additional historical interest. For collectors specializing in Soviet nuclear submarines, Northern Fleet insignia, and Cold War naval history, this is a distinctive original badge representing the third hull of the legendary Typhoon-class program at the beginning of its service history.
