An original 1984 Mongolian People’s Republic commemorative badge marking the 45th Anniversary of the Victory at Khalkhin Gol, one of the defining military events in modern Mongolian history. The 1939 fighting ended with the decisive defeat of Japanese forces by the combined Mongolian and Soviet armies, and the victory became one of the principal symbols of Mongolian-Soviet military brotherhood throughout the socialist period. The 45th anniversary was officially commemorated on a major scale in 1984. The monumental Victory Memorial at Khamar-Daba and the Khalkhin Gol Victory Museum were also established for the 45th anniversary in 1984, underlining the importance attached to this particular jubilee.

The badge has a particularly strong military design. Against a textured red field, the upper section displays the paired symbols of the Mongolian People’s Republic and Soviet Union—the Mongolian Soyombo and Soviet hammer and sickle, placed within interlocking circular devices to symbolize the wartime alliance. Beneath them are a crossed cavalry saber and rifle, representing the forces that fought together at Khalkhin Gol. The lower section carries the prominent inscription “Khalkhin Gol 1939–1984,” directly identifying the 45-year anniversary. The reverse is plain and retains its original period horizontal pin assembly.

This piece should properly be described as a commemorative anniversary badge rather than a state medal. This distinction is useful for collectors: the earlier 1979 40th Anniversary Victory Medal was formally instituted as an MPR jubilee medal, whereas the 1984 piece belongs to the separate series of Khalkhin Gol commemorative badges produced for successive anniversaries.
