Description
Original Item – Only One Available. Offered here is an original commemorative badge marking the 10th anniversary of the Riga OMON, one of the very first OMON detachments established anywhere in the Soviet Union. Founded on 2 December 1988 under the Internal Troops of the MVD USSR and subordinated to the 42nd Division, the unit recruited heavily from Afghan War veterans and became one of the most operationally active and historically significant special purpose formations of the late Soviet era. The detachment played a central role during the dramatic events of January 1991 in Latvia, cementing its place as one of the most widely known OMON units in Soviet history.
The badge itself is struck in silvered metal with enamel and follows the classic shield-and-sword form synonymous with Soviet law enforcement prestige insignia. The obverse features the full Soviet state emblem in raised gilt relief at center, flanked by enamel scroll banners identifying the unit, division, and founding dates 1988–1998. A vertical sword and crossed lightning bolts overlay the shield, drawn directly from OMON corps iconography. The reverse carries a solid threaded brass nut-and-post pin fastener.
Commemorative pieces attributed to the Riga OMON are genuinely scarce, issued in tightly limited quantities for serving and veteran personnel only. This example presents in excellent condition with strong enamel color, bold gilt detail, and fully intact hardware. A serious piece for any focused collection of Soviet MVD or special forces insignia.
