A rare early Type 2 “Honored Railway Worker” badge, an official professional distinction associated with Mongolia’s railway service and the generations of specialists who operated one of the country’s most important transport institutions. The modern Ulaanbaatar Railway developed from the Mongolian-Soviet railway partnership established in 1949 and became the backbone of Mongolia’s north-south rail system, linking the country with Russia and, ultimately, China. The “Honored Railway Worker” title is a formal railway-sector honor awarded for exemplary and distinguished service rather than an ordinary employee badge; Mongolia’s transport authorities continue to confer the title today. This example belongs to the mid 1990s Type 2 pin-fastened series, following the earlier screwback form and representing the continuation of this established railway distinction into Mongolia’s post-socialist period.

The badge is an impressive multi-piece construction centered on a separately applied silver-colored diesel locomotive advancing along the rails beneath Mongolian flag, red-blue-red national colors. Behind the locomotive are a three-aspect railway signal and snow-capped mountains, while gilt grain frames the composition and crossed railway tools complete the lower section. Across the broad white-enamel scroll appears “Honored Railway Worker.” The reverse reveals the layered construction and retains the individually applied serial number, while the original red suspension uses the horizontal pin fastening characteristic of this Type 2 version. The enamel remains strong and glossy, the locomotive retains crisp detail, and the badge shows only honest period wear to the gilt surfaces and original ribbon.

For the specialist collector, the very low serial No. 749 is one of the most important features of this example. An earlier Type 1 screwback is known in the 600-number range, placing No. 749 remarkably close to the apparent transition between the two constructions and strongly suggesting that this badge belongs among the earliest Type 2 examples.
