1990s Russian Spetsnaz Vityaz "For Distinction in Service" Medal – Rare Original Issue

Original Item – Only One Available. An original and increasingly hard to find award of Russia's most famous special forces detachment of the turbulent 1990s, Vityaz, the elite spetsnaz unit of the MVD Internal Troops and the founding home of the coveted red beret. The obverse carries superbly detailed relief symbolism instantly recognizable: a clenched fist gripping an AKS-74U carbine before an oak-and-laurel wreath, surmounted by the red-enameled maroon beret with its officer's cockade, above a red enamel scroll bearing the unit's name "Vityaz." Encircling the design is the detachment's motto "Reliability, Decisiveness, Professionalism". The medal hangs from its correct Russian pentagonal suspension with maroon ribbon edged and striped in the orange-and-black of St. George, the classic color language of Russian combat distinction.

The reverse is struck For Distinction in Service in traditional Cyrillic lettering above an award number line, with a small maker's mark at the bottom rim, a detail we always photograph, because it separates period originals from the flood of modern souvenir strikes. The number line on this example remains unengraved, as encountered on a portion of period stock and the ribbon and reverse pin assembly are complete and functional. Wear consistent with age, nothing more.

Vityaz insignia from the late 1990s occupies a special place in post-Soviet collecting, this was the era when the unit's veterans were writing the modern history of Russian counter-terrorism, and awards from these years were produced in small runs for a small community of operators and veterans. They surface far less often than the ubiquitous later commemoratives.
