An original 1991 Honorary Medal for the 70th Anniversary of the Mongolian People’s Revolution, one of the final major state jubilee decorations issued under the Mongolian People’s Republic. The medal was awarded by Decree No. 94 of the President of the MPR on 18 June 1991, commemorating seventy years since the Revolution of 1921 and recognizing citizens for long and productive service to the country. The timing makes this particular anniversary especially significant: Mongolia had held its first free multiparty elections in July 1990 and was already moving rapidly away from the socialist political system, yet the historic People’s Revolution remained important enough to be honored with a formal state decoration. Only months later, on 13 January 1992, Mongolia adopted its new democratic Constitution, bringing the constitutional era of the Mongolian People’s Republic to its conclusion. The 70th Anniversary Medal therefore stands at a remarkable historical crossroads, the last major People’s Revolution jubilee celebrated while Mongolia was still formally the MPR.

Produced in Ulaanbaatar Mint, this later domestic issue has a distinctly different character from the Soviet-manufactured revolutionary jubilee medals. The circular gilt medal centers the red-enamel Soyombo, accompanied by the traditional Mongolian-script representation of the revolutionary anniversary and the numeral “70” between small laurel sprays. The unusually restrained field is suspended from a broad triangular mount, with a strong central gilt sunburst rising toward the suspension ring. The reverse is plain, while the mount retains its original horizontal pin fastening. 

For the specialist collector, the 1991 70th Anniversary Medal is arguably the most historically interesting of the late People’s Revolution jubilee series because of the political moment in which it was awarded. Recipients were drawn from across Mongolian society rather than from a narrow military or party constituency: surviving award histories include agricultural workers, technical specialists, educators, medical personnel and other citizens whose careers had been spent in the institutions and economy of the MPR. With its Ulaanbaatar production, official presidential award status, classic Soyombo symbolism and extraordinary position at the very end of the Mongolian People’s Republic.
