A rare original 1992 Mongolian State Security 70th Anniversary Badge, commemorating seventy years of Mongolia’s modern intelligence and state-security service, whose institutional history begins with the establishment of the Internal Protection Department in 1922. Over the socialist period the organization developed into Mongolia’s principal intelligence and counterintelligence apparatus, responsible for foreign intelligence, counterintelligence, protection of state security and other sensitive functions. Collectors commonly describe this service as the “Mongolian KGB” because of its close institutional and operational relationship with the Soviet security system, although this is a collector shorthand rather than its formal Mongolian title. Mongolia’s intelligence authority itself traces its modern organizational history to 1922.

The 70th anniversary in 1992 is particularly significant because it fell directly inside Mongolia’s transition from the socialist Mongolian People’s Republic to a democratic state. The former Ministry of Public Security had been dissolved in 1990 and the state-security structure substantially reorganized; in 1992 Mongolia adopted its new Constitution and enacted its first law specifically regulating state-security and intelligence activity. This badge therefore belongs to a very different historical moment from the better-known 60th-anniversary issue of 1982. The badge retains its original period pin fastening.
