A rare original 75th anniversary badge of the Mongolian Internal Troops, issued in 1997 to mark the lineage of one of Mongolia’s oldest state security and military formations. The service traces its foundation to 16 July 1922, when, on the initiative of Damdin Sukhbaatar, a small Special Detachment was formed under the Internal Protection Department to guard important government facilities, escort prisoners and protected communications, and assist in suppressing serious internal disorder. The 75th anniversary fell at an especially important institutional moment: following the democratic transition, the Internal Troops had been separated from the old socialist-era security structure, and the 1995 Law on Internal Troops established the service with its own headquarters, professional units and specialized formations. The 1997 jubilee therefore commemorated not only seventy-five years of continuous institutional tradition, but the service’s emergence as a reorganized security force of democratic Mongolia.

The badge is a substantial gilt-metal and multicolor enamel issue, built around a circular central composition framed by radiating gilt panels. A small Soyombo crowns the design, while the red enamel ring carries the inscription “75th Anniversary of the Internal Troops.” The central pale-blue medallion contains a gilt black banner. The plain gilt reverse retains its original horizontal safety-pin fastening and shows natural period wear and toning.

Internal Troops anniversary insignia occupy a particularly specialized place in modern Mongolian militaria because the organization itself bridges the country’s revolutionary, socialist and democratic security systems. Over its history the service operated under the Internal Protection organs, the Ministry of Public Security, the Border and Internal Troops structure and later the General Police framework, while retaining responsibility for the protection of strategically important state facilities and support of public security operations. The 1997 75th-anniversary issue belongs to the brief early post-socialist period when this old military institution was being formally redefined for the new state, making it considerably more historically specific than a general anniversary pin and an excellent piece for a collection of Mongolian Internal Troops, national security insignia, post-socialist military badges or modern Mongolian state decorations.
