Description
Original Item – Only One Available. An original 1998 commemorative table medal marking the 80th anniversary of the Criminal Investigation Service of Russia's Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) in the Moscow Region. The anniversary traces its origins to 5 October 1918, when the Soviet government formally established criminal investigation departments to combat serious crime, organized banditry, and other criminal offenses. Throughout the Soviet period and into the Russian Federation, the service developed into one of the principal operational branches of the internal affairs system, employing criminal investigators, detectives, and specialized officers responsible for identifying and apprehending dangerous offenders. By 1998, the Moscow Region Criminal Investigation Directorate operated within the regional Main Directorate of Internal Affairs, confronting the violent organized crime and criminal networks that characterized Russia's turbulent post-Soviet decade. This anniversary issue commemorates eight decades of the regional service's history and the generations of operational officers, commanding personnel, and veterans associated with its work.
The medal is a substantial, approximately 60 mm circular presentation piece, executed with attractive antique-gold appearance and finely detailed raised relief. The obverse features the distinctive Moscow heraldic composition of Saint George on horseback slaying the dragon, enclosed within a radiating shield surmounted by an upright sword. The surrounding inscriptions read "Moscow Region" and "Criminal Investigation," with the anniversary dates 1918 and 1998 displayed on flowing banners. The reverse is dominated by a large raised numeral "80" above the inscription "Years," accompanied by a finely modeled laurel branch against a textured field. Its contrasting polished highlights and darker recessed surfaces accentuate the depth of the design. The medal remains in excellent condition, with well-preserved relief, attractive original-looking surfaces, and only minor signs of age. A protective transparent display capsule is also shown in the photographs.
This anniversary medal belongs to the tradition of substantial departmental presentation pieces produced to commemorate important milestones in Russian law-enforcement institutions. Its specific Moscow Region designation distinguishes it from general nationwide Criminal Investigation Service commemoratives and from insignia associated with the separate Moscow City Criminal Investigation Directorate. Issued during the final years of the 1990s, it represents an especially consequential period in the history of Russian policing, when regional criminal investigation units faced the challenges of organized crime and a rapidly changing post-Soviet society. An appealing original commemorative issue for collectors specializing in Russian MVD history, criminal investigation insignia, and regional law-enforcement memorabilia.
