A rare 2002 70th Anniversary badge of Mongolia’s Military Counterintelligence Service, commemorating the specialized military-security structure whose institutional history dates to 1932. The service emerged at a particularly dangerous moment for Mongolia, following Japan’s occupation of Manchuria and the rapid expansion of Japanese military and intelligence activity along the country’s eastern approaches. In 1932 a Military Special Department was established with the Second Cavalry Corps, while dedicated military counterintelligence units were organized alongside the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th divisions. Their work developed around protecting the armed forces from espionage, subversion, desertion and hostile penetration, and by the late 1930s these special sections were operating directly with frontline formations in eastern Mongolia, including during the security preparations surrounding the 1939 Battles of Khalkhin Gol.

The badge is a substantial multi-piece composition dominated by a circular arga-bileg emblem at center, a dark enameled black banner in upper field and broad gilt radiating elements framed by oak leaves. Red enamel banners at the lower sides carry “ЦСТ” - Military Counterintelligence and “years,” while the blue lower panel bears the anniversary numeral “70.” The reverse retains its original period pin fitting. Anniversary insignia from Mongolia’s military counterintelligence establishment were produced for a narrow internal service community rather than mass public distribution, and individual examples appear very infrequently; the 70th-anniversary issue is therefore an especially desirable piece for a serious collection of Mongolian intelligence, state-security or military special-service insignia.
