2004 Russian Lermontov Committee “For Restoration of Peace & Accord in the Caucasus” Medal with Award Document – Silver, Low Serial Number, Rare Original Issue

Original Item – Only One Available. A very rare silver Lermontov Medal of the Russian Lermontov Committee, issued for “personal contribution to the restoration of peace and accord in the Caucasus” and accompanied by its original 190th-anniversary award certificate. The Russian Lermontov Committee was established in 2003 by writers, Lermontov scholars and representatives connected with the Writers’ Union of Russia and the Military-Heraldic Company; its early co-chairmen included celebrated poet Rasul Gamzatov, Hero of the Soviet Union and writer Vladimir Karpov, and Lermontov scholar Vladimir Zakharov. The Committee created two principal versions of its Lermontov Medal, with this Caucasus type specifically intended to recognize public and civic figures for contributions toward restoring peace and reconciliation in the region. The accompanying certificate dates the issue to the commemoration of the 190th anniversary of Mikhail Lermontov’s birth in 2004, placing it among the earliest years of the Committee and its award system. Contemporary regulations state that the medals were produced in silver and nickel silver, making the silver version the more desirable material variant for the specialist collector.

The obverse carries a finely modeled portrait of Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov in military uniform, with name beneath. The reverse identifies the scarcer Caucasus-purpose type: an eagle with spread wings stands above a mountain landscape, surrounded by the inscription “For the Restoration of Peace and Accord in the Caucasus.” Most importantly, this example is individually numbered № 031, an exceptionally low two-digit serial from a system in which every medal was assigned its own consecutive number. It is suspended from the correct yellow, black and white ribbon prescribed for this version and is accompanied by the burgundy Russian Lermontov Committee certificate bearing the same Caucasus award wording. 

As a collector piece, the combination is unusually strong: silver construction, the specialized Caucasus peace-and-reconciliation type, very low serial No. 031, and its original 190th-anniversary certificate. The medal shows attractive natural silver toning and light age-related handling while retaining crisp portrait and reverse relief, and the original document remains complete in its burgundy cover. A particularly desirable documented set for an advanced collection of Russian commemorative awards, Caucasus-related decorations, literary medals, or post-Soviet Russian faleristics.
