A rare original 2012 Mongolian Armed Forces Unit 150 “Elite Battalion” 40th Anniversary Badge, commemorating four decades of one of Mongolia’s best-known professional combat units. Unit 150 was established on 30 April 1972 as the Mongolian People’s Army Training Special Battalion, initially responsible for preparing junior commanders and military specialists. During the post-socialist military reforms it was reorganized in 1997 as the Professional Special Motorized Rifle Battalion, inheriting the traditions and battle flag of Unit 150 and developing the capability to carry out combat and special missions as well as peace-support operations. 

The badge was produced for Unit 150’s 40th anniversary in 2012, an important distinction, as the “40 years” refers to the unit’s 1972–2012 institutional history, not forty years since the Professional Special Motorized Rifle Battalion designation. The design carries a dark-blue suspension bar marked “40 Years,” while the large circular medallion identifies the Mongolian Armed Forces and Unit 150. At center is the battalion’s emblem beneath a banner and within a laurel wreath, executed in deep blue, white and gilt enamel; the reverse is finished with a traditional Mongolian pattern and pin fastening.

Unit 150 became particularly important in Mongolia’s transition toward a professional, internationally deployable force. It was the country’s first unit designated for peace-support operations, participated in multinational training from the early 2000s, and supplied personnel for later Mongolian deployments abroad. Anniversary insignia from an individual elite unit was produced for a much narrower military audience than general Armed Forces commemoratives, principally the unit’s serving personnel, leadership and veteran community. The combination of the 40th-anniversary date, Unit 150 attribution, Professional Special Motorized Rifle Battalion lineage and direct association with Mongolia’s early peacekeeping force makes this a particularly strong piece for an advanced collection of Mongolian Armed Forces, special-unit or peacekeeping insignia.
