Description

Original Item – Only One Available. A rare original 90th Anniversary Badge of Mongolia's General Intelligence Agency (GIA), issued in 2012 to commemorate nine decades of the country's modern state intelligence service. The institution traces its foundation to July 3, 1922, when the Mongolian government established the Directorate of Internal Protection, the predecessor of the successive intelligence and state security organizations of the Mongolian People's Republic and modern Mongolia. Over the following ninety years, the service evolved from a revolutionary-era security institution into the country's principal intelligence and counterintelligence agency, responsible for gathering intelligence, detecting foreign espionage, and safeguarding national security. This anniversary distinction was awarded to outstanding serving intelligence officers in recognition of their professional achievements and dedicated service, as well as honored veterans whose careers contributed to the institution's development. The 2012 jubilee celebrated generations of intelligence personnel who served through Mongolia's socialist period, its close cooperation with Soviet security services, and the transformation of its intelligence establishment following the democratic transition of 1990.

The badge is an elaborate multi-layered composition combining polished silver-toned metalwork, gilt relief, and deep blue and red enamel. Its central circular medallion displays a raised eight-pointed directional star surrounding Mongolia's national Soyombo emblem, representing the intelligence service's responsibility for protecting the state and its sovereignty. A vertical sword rises above the medallion, framed by golden rays, while sweeping silver-toned elements and red-enamel ribbons complete the surrounding composition. The lower ribbon bears the initials of the General Intelligence Agency in raised lettering, with the anniversary numeral "90" prominently displayed beneath it. The substantial relief and contrasting finishes give the piece a particularly striking appearance. The reverse is silver-toned, screw post with original nut and visible surface marks from handling. The badge retains its rich enamel colors and sharply defined details, with minor wear consistent with age.

The 90th Anniversary Badge is a particularly desirable piece within modern Mongolian intelligence collecting, encountered less frequently on the collectors' market than the earlier 80th-anniversary issue. Its significance lies in its connection to the professional intelligence officers and honored veterans of an institution whose history spans Mongolia's revolutionary security services, the Cold War intelligence apparatus, and the modern General Intelligence Agency. Unlike general military or public commemorative decorations, this specialized departmental badge represents a more restricted collecting field, with comparatively few examples appearing in international circulation. An attractive original anniversary issue for advanced collections of Mongolian intelligence, state security, and post-socialist security-service insignia.
