Description

Original Items – Only One Set Available. A rare original 50th Anniversary commemorative badge and matching pin of the Russian Military Radio-Electronic Intelligence Center in Cuba, marking 1964–2014 and directly associated with the legendary Soviet/Russian intelligence complex generally known in Western literature as Lourdes, but remembered by many Soviet personnel by its actual location at Torrens, near Havana. Specialist histories of the Soviet presence in Cuba trace the GRU radio-electronic intelligence establishment there to 1964, when the center began operating with specialists of the 6th Directorate of the GRU, responsible for radio intelligence; the complex was developed further through the 1960s and became one of the Soviet Union’s most important overseas signals-intelligence installations because of its proximity to the United States. From Cuba, its personnel monitored communications and strategic command networks and collected electronic intelligence throughout the region. The Russian presence continued after the collapse of the USSR until the center was closed in 2001–2002; accordingly, the dates 1964–2014 on this set commemorate fifty years from its establishment, not fifty continuous years of operation.

The main badge is a substantial multi-piece gilt and enamel construction, suspended from a burgundy ribbon bar carrying a raised “50” and laurel branch. Around the central medallion is the explicit inscription “Radio-Electronic Intelligence Center,” with the dates “1964–2014.” Its imagery leaves little ambiguity about the Cuban connection: the center combines a large satellite/interception dish, a dark-blue globe, and the crossed Russian and Cuban flags, all set against the GRU red carnation. Accompanying it is the matching miniature pin inscribed “RER Center – 50 Years,” again displaying the Russian and Cuban flags above a communications dish. Both pieces retain their original fastening systems and show only light handling consistent with careful preservation.

For the intelligence collector, the significance of this set lies in the institution it commemorates. Detailed histories of the Torrens/Lourdes complex distinguish within it a dedicated GRU Radio-Electronic Intelligence Center, alongside separate KGB special-radio, General Staff communications, and naval intelligence elements, illustrating how unusually important the Cuban complex was to Soviet strategic intelligence collection. The combination of the exact 1964–2014 centenary-style dating, GRU-associated RER symbolism, Russian-Cuban flags, full-size badge and matching 50-year pin makes this a particularly specialized surviving jubilee set. A rare and visually impressive original issue for an advanced collection of Russian GRU insignia, OSNAZ and signals-intelligence material, Cold War intelligence badges, or Soviet/Russian military service in Cuba.
