Description
Original Item – Only One Available. A rare original Russian GRU General Staff 100th Anniversary jubilee badge, issued for the centenary of Russia’s centralized military intelligence service in 2018. The anniversary traces to 5 November 1918, when the Registration Directorate was established within the Field Staff of the Revolutionary Military Council to bring the Red Army’s military intelligence organs under centralized direction; 5 November subsequently became the institutional anniversary of Soviet and Russian military intelligence. The organization evolved through successive Soviet structures into the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff, universally known as the GRU, and today continues as the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces.
The decoration is an elaborate multi-piece gilt and silvered-metal issue with black, white, orange and red enamel detailing. Its obverse carries the military-intelligence heraldic composition within a wreath beneath the emblem of the Russian Armed Forces, surrounded by alternating enamel segments and the motto “We Serve Russia.” The suspension bar is faced with black, orange and white ribbon and mounted with a prominent gilt “100” over a laurel branch, immediately identifying the centenary purpose. The reverse is especially important to the attribution, bearing a raised five-pointed star together with the designation “GRU General Staff, Armed Forces of the Russian Federation” and the exact anniversary date 5 November 2018.
Unlike a regular service medal or state decoration, this is a special institutional jubilee badge connected directly with the GRU’s centenary, intended for the military-intelligence community and its tradition of service rather than for general military wear. Material associated with individual GRU departments and major institutional anniversaries remains one of the more specialized areas of modern Russian intelligence collecting, and the combination of the 100th-anniversary date, explicit GRU General Staff reverse inscription, distinctive intelligence heraldry and complete original suspension makes this an especially strong example for an advanced collection of Russian military intelligence, GRU, special-service or post-Soviet security insignia.
